Heather Thom

Heather Thom is a qualified, HPCSA-registered counsellor (PRC 0039918) based in Pinelands, Cape Town. Her background is rooted in education — she graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BA in Primary Education, specialising in Art, and spent years teaching across grades 4 to 7, including work with special needs learners. She later completed her Honours in Psychology and a full-time B.Psych Equivalent at Cornerstone Institute, qualifying her to register with the HPCSA and open her private practice. She is currently completing a Master’s degree in Infant Mental Health at Stellenbosch University.
Heather works with children, adolescents, new parents, and families. Her areas of focus include maternal mental health — supporting mothers through the emotional and psychological challenges of pregnancy and early parenthood — and counselling children and teenagers who are struggling academically, socially, or behaviourally at school. She also offers practical parent guidance for caregivers navigating these challenges alongside their children, and runs a weekly support group for new mothers.
Her therapeutic approaches include Gestalt Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Infant Mental Health practices, which she draws on flexibly depending on the needs of each client.
In addition to individual counselling, Heather offers psychometric assessments: school readiness assessments for children in Grade R, and subject choice assessments for Grade 9 learners. Both include a detailed feedback session with parents. She also presents psychoeducation talks on topics including attachment, ADHD, learning difficulties, and bullying.
Heather sees clients in person at her practice in Pinelands and offers online sessions when needed.
